Why am I hearing that council is going to give tax abatement for 10, that's right, TEN years to a developer that ALREADY OWNS AND HAS COMPLETED DEVELOPMENT in Monroeville. Meeting is this Tuesday night.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

It appears that once again Monroeville Council caves to the developers. While Dice wants to go after residents who are underassesed over at the School Board, here comes City Council to "wave" taxes on a developer who is getting his "upgrades" paid for by the Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority. What is wrong with this town? Was this part of a deal that was worked out behind closed doors? Residents pay and developers don't? Not only is it crazy it is totally irresponsible on the part of the council: watch the votes on this one folks, you'll be able to see the results of payoffs in process.

Why not make Monroeville a tax free business zone. Better yet, we can bank roll development through low interest loans with long term payoffs (basically the same thing). We should offer the same to the Mall and all of the businesses and developers in Monroeville. If I was a business I would threaten to move out if I don't get the same deal as Elmhurts. Seems like the tax free zone is a knee jerk reaction to losing Westinghouse branch of Toshiba. Negotiations 101 do not give long term concessions. I doubt the business tenent is the type that chose Monroeville because the Developer is getting a tax free incentive.

If I was a landlord, I would leave my buildings empty. We can make up the money by having the Redevelopment Authority cease residential properties for back taxes, as I heard that a Council Member (the guy that is currntly holding Deb Hartwick's seat) suggest during the kick-off for the redevelopment authority (Hopefully this is not the purpose of the redevelopment authority, if so we should all watch out for the direction that council is giving them or we should all watch out - I heard some of the folks that own the vacant houses are in nursing homes - cease away good samaritans). I thought this was to bring high profile businesses to the area not peck away at residential properties. But I digress.

I think the hope of the council was to get authority to seize (or declare siezable) whatever they deemed profitable for themselves and the developers to do so. I wish they would cease and desist in their deriliction of duty in regards to Monroeville. Your thoughts on the tax free zone are provocative..why wouldn't other companies expect the same treatment?

The term "Tax Abatement" is the newest fashionable term to sweep local government since the hula hoop. They throw it around like a Frisbee. Wait until it comes back like a Boomerang and knocks them to their knees.
