Diaper Drive

The annual Diaper Drive for Catholic Charities will be held at all Masses on the weekend of July 12 and 13 at North American Martyrs Catholic Church, 2526 Haymaker Road, Monroeville.

The parish's Respect Life Committee is helping with the collection of diapers and baby items needed for low-income mothers assisted by Women In Need programs.

Priority items are diapers, baby wipes, diaper cream, formula and personal care items, such as lotion and shampoo.

Items for donation can be left in the collection boxes provided at each entrance to the church.

Also at North American Martyrs:

• The next Holy Hour is at 7 p.m. on July 14.

Holy Hour begins with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, followed by evening prayers, prayers for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, private adoration and meditation.

Booklets and prayer sheets are provided.

• A 10-week Bible study focusing on Acts of the Apostles meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays in DeLuca Hall.

• The church's Ladies of Charity continue recitations of the Rosary at area nursing homes this month, with stops on July 15 at The Cedars (10 a.m.) and Arden Courts (11 a.m.), and on July 18 at Golden Living Nursing Home, Sunrise and Autumn Ridge (all at 10:30 a.m.)

Residents of the facilities and their guests are welcome to participate.

n Vacation Bible school for chidren from age 4 through fifth grade will run from July 14 to 18, with hours of 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Registration forms are available at all exits of the church or by calling the religious education office at 412- 349-0942.

• North American Martyrs Catholic School will hold its fifth annual flea market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 2 in DeLuca Hall.

EZ Storage has donated space that the church will use to store large items that donors cannot keep until late July. To make arrangements to donate such items and have them stored for the sale, call 412-372-2874.

The church will begin accepting donations of other items for the sale on July 29.

Organizers expect items available at the flea market will include household goods, tools, collectibles, electronics, furniture, children's clothing, books, music, sporting goods, toys, games and more.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Monroeville Christian

All women are invited to attend the Ladies Bible Study summer series next Tuesday at Monroeville Christian Church, 3780 Northern Pike.

The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Also at Monroeville Christian:

• Anyone who has finished 12th grade but hasn't yet gone off to college can sign up to attend the church's summer camp for teens, which will run from July 27 through Aug. 1.

The Christian service camp will include sermons, lessons, devotions, praise time, crafts, swimming, recreation, hikes, camp fires, a 100-foot water slide and more.

• All are invited to attend the church's annual trip to Pittsburgh Steelers training camp on Aug. 4.

Departure from the church parking lot will be at 1 p.m.

The day will involve watching Steelers practice and getting autographs.

Monroeville Community Church

Monroeville Community Church, 2456 Tilbrook Road, will hold a free, one-week vacation Bible school from July 14 to 18 at Monroeville Community Park.

The vacation Bible school, which will be held in conjunction with Christian Sports International, will be a TEAM Sports Program featuring baseball, basketball and soccer clinics.

Participants will begin each day with exercise, then break into smaller groups for the sports clinics, which will include drills and team play. Former professional athletes will be involved, as will college players and coaches.

Snacks and biblical teachings also will be part of each day.

MUM outdoors

Through Aug. 31, Monroeville United Methodist Church is holding outdoor summer worship services at 9:15 a.m. on Sundays at Old Monroeville Community Park East off Tilbrook Road.

The services feature singing, preaching and fellowship offered in the beauty of an outdoor setting. Those attending are invited to dress casually and bring lawn chairs or blankest to sit on.

In case of inclement weather, the services are held under a park shelter or, if necessary, at the church.

Monroeville United Methodist continues to offer its traditional services at 11 a.m. on Sundays in the sanctuary.

Trinity Lutheran

Trinity Lutheran Church, 2555 Haymaker Road, Monroeville, has changed its worship times.

There no longer is a Saturday-evening service.

Sunday worship is at 10:30 am., with Sunday School and adult Bible study both at 9:30 a.m., preceding the service.

Greater Works seminar

Greater Works Outreach in Monroeville will hold its annual Holy Spirit Seminar from from July 14 through 19, with free services at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily.

This year's theme is "The Start of Something New." Offerings will be taken and a nursery will be provided for each session.

A daily vacation Bible school and evening gym activities for children, a youth seminar for teens and adult housing will be available at minimal costs.

Cross Roads VBS

Cross Roads Presbyterian Church in Monroeville is taking registrations for its vacation Bible school for children from age 3 through sixth grade.

The school will run from July 21 through 25, with hours of 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. each day.

MUM flea market

The Inclusion Team of Monroeville United Methodist Church is sponsoring a flea market to raise funds that will help make the church universally accessible to those with physical disabilities.

The flea market will be run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 19 in the church parking lot at 219 Center Road.

In case of inclement weather, the event will take place in the church's fellowship hall.

Health screening

North American Martyrs Catholic Church in Monroeville will host a Life Line Screening event on Aug. 8 in DeLuca Hall.

Four of the screenings available will use non-invasive, painless ultrasound and Doppler to assess the risk of stroke, vascular disease and osteoporosis. These tests include a carotid artery screening to assess risk for stroke, an abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, an ankle brachial index to screen for peripheral arterial disease and a bone density screening to assess risk of osteoporosis.

Each test will take approximately 10 minutes. Patients will not be required to change clothes.

A test for atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rate) also will be available. An irregular heart rate increases risk for coronary and carotid artery disease by five times.

Summer programs

Presbyterian Church of Pitcairn is offering two programs throughout this summer.

One is a summer library program, provided by Monroeville Public Library for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, that runs from 1 to 3 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 13.

The other program is the weekly Summer Blast, which replaces traditional morning vacation Bible school.

Summer Blast is open to children from age 3 to those entering fifth grade and includes recreation, crafts, music and Bible lessons. This program is being held every Wednesday through Aug. 6, except next Wednesday; for more information, call 412-372-7707.

For volunteers

"Protecting God's Children," a seminar for volunteers who work directly with children in any parish, school or CCD program, will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 12 in DeLuca Hall at North American Martyrs Catholic Church in Monroeville.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh requires that most volunteers, including ushers, lectors, choir members, school volunteers and catechists, take the seminar.

Taking registrations

St. Bernadette Catholic School in Monroeville continues to accept registrations of students in preschool through seventh grade for 2008-09.

The school offers preschool programs for 3- and 4-year-olds, as well as full-day kindergarten. To be eligible for kindergarten, students must be age 5 by Sept. 1.

Registration requirements include children's birth and baptismal certificates, along with a $100 non-refundable deposit that can be applied to tuition.
