Pitcairn Council to seek new bids for cable service

Pitcairn Council voted 4-3 on Tuesday to toss out bids to buy the borough's cable service.

Dissenting on the vote were council members Lee Mignogna, Kurt Seibel and George Toth.

Jack Bova, council president, said the reason council voted in favor of tossing out the bids was to see if the borough could get a better offer.

"We're hoping to get a bit more money," said Bova.

Comcast and B&B Cable of Mechanicsburg were the two bidders for Pitcairn Cable.

Both offers were worth more than $1 million. B&B would have allowed Pitcairn Cable to retain its name, while Comcast would have made the service a part of its business.

Those who dissented on the vote said they believed now is the time to accept bids on the project, particularly with the economy in what some consider to be a bear market.

"We don't know if it will go up," said Toth.

But Councilman Jim Grill Jr. maintained that when selling a product, one doesn't necessarily sell on the first bid.

"It's like selling anything," he said. "We'll get bids again."

Council plans to advertise for new bids as soon as possible.
