Pitcairn Council tables vote on selling cable system

A vote on whether to sell Pitcairn's cable TV system won't be taken until mid-July at the earliest.

Pitcairn Council voted unanimously on Monday to table a vote on whether to sell the cable system to one of two bidders -- Comcast Cable or B&B Cable of Mechanicsburg -- because solicitor Craig Alexander couldn't attend the meeting.

Alexander was to explain the details of the bids and provide additional legal advice.

The vote on whether to sell the cable system could be taken at council's next meeting, set for 7 p.m. on July 15 in the borough building.

Each company is offering Pitcairn more than $1 million for the cable system.

B&B would continue to run Pitcairn Cable under its existing name, leasing its equipment and property, and would offer to keep Pitcairn's existing cable employee.

Comcast would, in essence, make Pitcairn Cable its own service, would not use borough equipment and would offer to allow Pitcairn's cable employee to work as a Comcast employee.

Former elected officials, speaking as residents, expressed opposition to the potential sale, arguing that the borough could continue to offer cable service less expensively than either bidder and make money on it.

Council members maintained that argument isn't necessarily true, saying the cable service is at the break-even point when factoring in a loan taken to pay for updating the system.

The loan, which is scheduled to be paid off in 2014, costs the borough about $60,000 a year.
