Pro wrestling takes local stage on Saturday
Burton vs. Bubba.
The main event of the nine-match card will feature B94 morning radio personality Bubba taking on Channel 4 sports anchor and Monroeville resident Jon "JB" Burton.
Burton has been training with Pittsburgh's own Sterling James Keenan, who has achieved fame on the local, national and international levels.
"The staff at Life Sports Center has been very agreeable to what we've wanted to do," said FNW promoter Dan Polinsky.
"This is something that may become a reoccurring event."
Polinsky, a lifelong pro wrestling fan, said the FNW promotion runs shows every six weeks, mostly from the ballroom at the Days Inn in Butler.
Saturday's event also marks the hometown debut of pro wrestling newcomer Samuel Elias.
Elias, a Monroeville resident and 2007 Gateway graduate, has been wrestling for about six months and has competed on cards in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and West Virginia.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder said he's been a fan of professional wrestling for as long as he can remember.
Like many kids his age, he grew up a fan of Hulk Hogan. He also has come to respect the in-ring abilities of wrestling legends Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes and Ricky Steamboat.
Elias knew that pro wrest-ling as a career was what he wanted to do.
He began his journey in December of 2005 at the FNW training facility in Plum. The facility had just opened and he was one of its first students.
A knee injury in the spring of 2007 put his training on hold for about six months.
He tore the meniscus in his right knee and, after surgery, was in a cast for six weeks. Rehab followed and he returned to the ring.
"We want FNW to be a family-friendly show," Elias said.
"We want the fans to have a good time. It's more about the wrestling in the ring than the show and drama."
Elias said he's pretty excited about his first match in his hometown. He admitted that he's also a little nervous.
"This is one of our biggest shows to date," he said.
"A lot of my friends will be there."
The show will feature nine matches, including women wrestlers. Food and drinks will be served.
Tickets are still available and are $15 for ringside reserved, $12 for general admission and $7 for children seven and under.
All emergency service personnel will be admitted to the event for $10 with a proper ID or badge.
